Acne is a common skin condition that comes in various forms, from mild blemishes to more severe breakouts. Understanding the different stages of acne can help you tailor your skincare routine and address each type effectively. Here’s a quick guide to the stages of acne and how to care for them.

1. The Stages of Acne

  • Whiteheads and Blackheads (Mild Acne): These are non-inflammatory types of acne caused by clogged pores. Whiteheads are closed, while blackheads are open and oxidised, giving them their dark appearance.
  • Papules and Pustules (Moderate Acne): When clogged pores become inflamed, they form red, tender bumps called papules. If these bumps contain pus, they’re called pustules, which often have a white or yellow centre.
  • Nodules and Cystic Acne (Severe Acne): These are deeper, more painful types of acne caused by inflammation and infection within the skin. Nodules are hard lumps, while cystic acne is softer and filled with pus, often leading to scarring if untreated.

2. How to Manage and Treat Each Stage

  • For Mild Acne: Use gentle cleansers and products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to clear pores and reduce oil buildup. Avoid picking at whiteheads or blackheads to prevent worsening the condition.
  • For Moderate Acne: Incorporate anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide or spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide. A dermatologist may recommend topical retinoids to prevent new blemishes.
  • For Severe Acne: Severe forms of acne like cysts and nodules require professional care. Consult a dermatologist for treatments such as prescription medications, antibiotics, or in-office procedures like chemical peels.
